Multiframe 5: Even More Features, And Now 100% Open Source Too!

Multiframe 5 - more features, increased stability, and now available for free!

Multiframe is developed with the purpose of saving costs for the customer. You can in an easy and cost-effective manner enter the thin client computing world lowering the costs of maintenance, licenses and reuse of existing infrastructure. With the release of Multiframe 5, this feature-rich, enterprise-ready thin client framework system has become even more available to the public:

In line with the focus and mindset of Redpill Linpro, we have finally completed the project of open source'ing Multiframe in accordance with the GNU Public License 3 found here.

What does this mean?

First of all, Multiframe is now available for free - point your browser to http://www.multiframe.net/download to obtain the latest, full-version ISO image which you can install, run and share with no strings attached...
Please be aware, though, that it comes with no included support services, so all testing and use of the software is on your own risk - but if you need assistance and/or support, maintenance, training and more, Redpill Linpro are looking forward to offering you everything you need. Please take a look at http://www.multiframe.net/purchase or http://www.multiframe.net/support for more information.

By not forcing you to buy a software license (a "license to use"), but rather offer you various support and maintenance models, the lower total cost of ownership should be pretty self-explaining.

Open Source Software is also recognized for a number of other advantages; some of these are:

Reduced dependence on software vendors

Easier to customize

Higher level of security

to name a few.

Of course, Multiframe 5 has a few other new features up it's sleeves as well:

Widescreen support
depending on the screen itself, and the graphic card in the client

Dual screen support
again, the client needs to have physical dual screen capabilities

Seamless Windows
we have experienced some shortcomings with the Multiframe Client's compatibility with Citrix's Seamless Windows Engine. After quite a lot of troubleshooting and testing, we are pretty sure that everything is now working 100%

Client Screen Saver
Finally the Multiframe Client has got it's own screen saver.
It may be activated by the end user, or by a rule set on the Multiframe Administration Server.

Client MP3 Player
The Multiframe Client now ships with an integrated MP3 player capable of playing .MP3-files from a network repository, plus streaming .MP3 from internet radios.

Automatic Client Image Downgrade
If the Multiframe Administration Server detects that a Client has a lower set of specifications (specifically RAM) than what we recommend for the full Multiframe Client Image, it will automatically select the compressed version ("squash") to be distributed to the Client

Different Administrator Roles
It is now possible to appoint local Administrators with limited admin rights

ISO CD Burning Capabilites on Client
The end-user can burn any CD image (.ISO) to disk, as long as the client has a compatible CD-writer and enough disk/memory for temporary files. This means the end-user may download a Multiframe Client VPN-enabled ISO image, burn to CD-ROM, and bring it home where she can boot any computer from this CD-ROM and access the office terminal server(s) via a VPN connection.
The same goes for USB memory sticks.

Several System Upgrades
As always, the developers has upgraded many of the included packages and components to further enhance stability, speed and security.
Some of these are the Linux Kernel and modules, X.org, Firefox, Gnome/GTK, the major libraries, and more.

Improved system logging
A few versions back, we gave the client system logging capabilites a huge upgrade, as all system logs on the client were reconfigured to be uploaded to the server (makes sense for zero admin clients that are wiped at each boot...).
Now we have focused on the Multiframe Administration Server, making sure all relevant data are logged and can be used for monitoring or troubleshooting.

Various improvements
Some improvements has been done with the Client boot screen to inform the end user that the client is in fact starting up. Another improvement on the Client is that the end user is now able to test the audio capabilities/functionality from the Client's control panel.
